A jewel in the heart of Rome
27 minutes by metro
Tiberina Island, the only urban island of the Tiber, is a wonderful place and it is rich of history. Its long shape, that vaguely resembles a boat, it's an oasis of peace in the heart of bustling Rome.
The origins of the island are not definitively cleared up. According to the legend, it was formed in 510 B.C. when, after the expulsion of King Tarquinius the Superb, the people threw their granaries into the river as a sign of revolt. Over time these granaries were massed to form the island.
Geological studies, however, suggest a natural origin of this island but, thanks to the legend it has become a place full of charm and mistery
