St.'Angelo Castle
A journay through time
On the right bank of the River Tiber, not far from Eudora guesthouse, stands the majestic Castle St. Angelo. This building, rich of history and mystery, has been an imperial mausoleum, a fortress, a papal residence and a prison over the centuries.
Firstly, Castel St. Angelo was built by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. Its circular shape, surmonted by a statue of an angel, made it a unique building. In the Middle Ages it became a stronghold for the city, connected to the Vatican through the Passetto di Borgo, a secret passage that allowed the popes to take refuge in case of danger.
Today, Castel St. Angelo is a museum that preserves inside it the testimonies of the different eras that have caracterized it.
