Circus Maximus
The greatest stadium of antiquity
Located in the valley between Palatino and the Aventino, the Circus Maximum was the largest stadium of antiquity and one of the most important places for social and religious life of romans. With a lenght about 600 meters and a width of 140 meters, it could accomodate up to 300.000 spectators, making it one of the buildings for the greatest performances of all time.
The historical roots of the Circus Maximus go back to the time of the kings, although Julius Caesar took it the current form. Here were held the chariot races, equestrian shows and circus games , all events of great appeal for Roman people.
Today, Circus Maximus is a large green area, but the remains of ancient walls and masonry structures allows us to imagine the majesty.
